The Galerie Kulturhaus, one of 34 municipal galleries in Berlin, is located on the first floor of the Kulturhaus Spandau. The Kulturhaus places great emphasis on “culture for all,” providing venues for numerous cultural events and social projects of all disciplines. In keeping with the concept of the house, the Galerie Kulturhaus has formulated a new thematic focus by showing outsider art in primarily socially inclusive exhibitions since 2019, while at the same time providing a unique selling point within Berlin's municipal galleries.
“Outsider art”? This term encompasses artistic works by people with physical, mental or psychological disabilities. In our approximately 100 square meters of exhibition space, you will see works that are often characterized by an unconventional visual language – works that impress with their display of unbroken imagination, of great urgency and persuasiveness, and which have captured a remarkable self-will almost untouched by the trends of contemporary art. Some of our artists receive support for their artistic work and development through art therapeutic institutions and workshops. For our exhibitions, we collaborate with these organizations.
We would be happy to see you at one of our accompanying events as well. Since the autumn of 2020, we have been offering regular creative workshops as part of a mediation program. Everyone interested is welcome to attend. This program is carried out in cooperation with the VHS Spandau and Macherei, an institution of the Johannesstift Diakonie Behindertenhilfe.
In addition to holding exhibitions, the gallery space also serves as a venue for smaller concerts and children's theater performances, with seating for up to 70 people.
