The Citadel in Spandau is considered one of the most important and best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe. It was built in the 16th century by Italian architects, on the remnants of the Burg Spandau at the time when the architecture of medieval castles lost some of its relevance due to the development of firearms. The Citadel was designed to provide protection for the residence city of Berlin-Cölln and to serve as a place of refuge in times of crisis. Today, guests can visit the historical sites, along with various museums and three municipal galleries. Special events are regularly held in the Italian Courtyards and in the Gothic Hall of the Citadel.
